On 20 January 2026, as part of the National Educational Development Plan 2026-2035, the government announced that the Standard 1 enrolment age will be lowered to age 6 (turning 6 in the academic year) to align more closely with international standards. This will commence in 2027 but will be optional initially. We do not yet know when it will be made compulsory but in 2027 parents have the option not to enroll their 6 years old in Standard 1 until the following year and thus remain at home or in preschool, should they feel their children are not yet ready for the primary school environment.
In addition the government also “encouraged” parents to prepare their children to enroll in preschool aged 5 (turning 5 in the academic year). It is not clear that this is going to be mandatory in due course nor that it will be widely provided in government schools. Further the government indicated that the Ministry of Education (Kementerian Pendidikan) would henceforth assume responsibility for “the whole preschool system”. Again it is not clear what this means precisely but our sources tell us it likely means that any preschool types currently administered separately from the Ministry of Education (MoE) would now come under the MoE responsibility. It is also not clear whether this includes the JKM (Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat) administered daycare/preschools. See below a news article relating to this announcement, including a video of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim making the announcement.
What does this mean for Purple Dragon?

Initially nothing changes but longer term it seems certain that we will no longer offer Kindergarten for children who have reached the new Standard 1 enrolment age (turning 6 in the academic year) as they will move to primary school at this point. For 2027, we will provide a K2 service for any of our current customers who prefer to wait until 2028, we will discuss this with impacted parents 1-2-1.
In terms of our education philosophy and curriculum, we view this change as a good thing in that it aligns with education and neuroscience research, and our philosophy, that early education is crucial for long term development and wellbeing and leaving it too late to start wastes the time when children are most receptive to learning, and indeed when they need to develop important brain pathways in language, mathematics, creativity, worldview and social/emotions experiences.
Further it goes some way to resolve an overlap between where Purple Dragon curriculum ends and the primary standard begins. Currently Standard 1 repeats many of the topics we cover in preschool because not all new entrants to Standard 1 have attended preschools. Therefore a potential mandatory aged 5 enrolment in preschool and earlier start age in primary minimises this overlap. It does not eliminate the overlap as our approach results in accelerated and more durable learning than traditional methods and we will continue to leverage this to ensure Purple Dragon children are well prepared for primary.
Future developments at Purple Dragon
There will be no change to our Nursery (N1 & N2) curriculum and structure. Once the government-announced changes are fully embedded, we will drop the K2 offering and reallocate the curriculum across PreK and K1 as best fits our aims for Purple Dragon children to prepare them intellectually, physically and emotionally for Standard 1 at age 6. We will have this all worked out and planned for well in advance of the start of 2027 and will share any noteworthy information in the run up to the new academic year.

We hope this helps to alleviate any concerns about the announced changes but if you do have any questions related to how Purple Dragon will manage this somewhat fluid environment please do contact our Principal, Ms. Jean Tan, in the first instance.
